Organizational Objective / Goal

To direct the operations, maintenance, and incidental construction/alteration projects for the grounds, and landscape of the university. Excludes athletic facilities and Gari Melchers Home & Studio.

General Description of Position

This position directs the performance of all grounds maintenance, parking lots and sidewalks, storm water utility systems and landscape projects on multiple sites including 95 acre Fredericksburg Campus, Dahlgren Campus, and Stafford Campus. The provision of a high level of attentive, dedicated service is essential to protect and enhance the Campus grounds, noted for their beauty and attractiveness. Waste removal, recycling programs, sustainability program support, emergency response, including snow/ice operations are included in the scope of this position. The position is designated essential in accordance with DHRM Policy 1.35.

Required Education

Bachelors degree in horticulture, agriculture or related field or equivalent training and experience.

Required Experience

Knowledge of plant pathology, entomology, horticulture, turf maintenance, and landscape design.

Knowledge of Storm water utility operations, parking lot and sidewalk maintenance, snow and ice operations, and other weather emergency operations.

Strong oral and written communications skills necessary.

Must be able to manage a complex operation and successfully interact with a wide range of customers, staff, and vendors.

Must have experience in assessing safety hazards and providing comprehensive safety training to include Integrated Pest management, Injury Prevention, Personal Protective Equipment, and Power Equipment Operation.

Previous supervisory experience and management of comparable duties at similar institutions/agencies required.

Valid Virginia driver’s license required.

Preferred Education

Bachelors degree in horticulture, agriculture or related field.

Preferred Experience

Management of landscape and grounds at an institution of higher education.

Experience with Virginia Capital Outlay processes.

Experience with Virginia public procurement laws and regulations.

Experience with staff training programs.

Current Pest Control applicators license.
