General Description of Position

This grant-funded counselor position will work from August until June.

This position serves the high schools in the Northern and Middle Necks region of Virginia. The Program Counselor provides one to one and small group mentoring to students in grades 9-12 with strategies for applying to college and securing financial aid.

Also, the program counselor conducts coaching sessions and classroom workshops on a variety of topics including, Navigating the College Application Process, Developing Academic Success Skills, How to Apply for Financial Aid, Selecting A Post-Secondary Educational Option, and Career Choices Primary duties involve exercising discretion and independent judgment in matters of significance to engaging students, their parents, and high school counselors in the enrollment processes for higher education institutions.

The counselor works with students in completing their application process for colleges, universities, and to help students understand the options and process for receiving financial aid; maintains relationships with area high school administrators, guidance
counselors, college personnel, and members of the community organization.

Occasional evening or after school hours may be required, as needed, for program activities.

Required Education

Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Required Experience

- Experience working with high school students

- Experience working with First Generation College students

- Experience with the college admission process

- Experience with financial aid processes

- Ability to relate well to students and have a passion for education

Preferred Education

-Master’s Degree in Education or
- Some Education courses or
- Some courses in counseling

Preferred Experience

Experience working with college access program or as a advisor in a school.
